"Motion
is not life. Motion is a manifestation of life. The miracle of life expresses
itself in motion and stillness. The power of life resides in potency of stillness."
-Dr.
Rollin E. Becker
G.I.
Gurdjieff, an Armenian mystic, gave an important place to movements and dance
awareness. A series of perhaps 150 dances and exercises derived from ancient
temples and esoteric schools were studied by Gurdjieff as he traveled through
Asia. These Sacred Movements, reconstructed from lost traditions, are a spiritual
and mystical experience, which inspire higher levels of consciousness and awareness.

Traditionally,
the study and practice of sacred dances has been an integral part of esoteric
schoolwork. Dance becomes a language, where each gesture, each attitude, each
sequence has its specific role and meaning, leading towards an inner discipline,
and a freedom from the narrow circle of automatic reactions
Gurdjieff called this the ‘presence of being’. This is the first
step towards self-awareness in our daily life.
In
developing ‘presence of being’ a certain effort, certain alertness
is required. The Sacred Dances consist of highly structured exact postures and
multiple rhythms to follow. Absolute precision of movement is demanded, from
the palms of the hands to the slightest position of the feet. All the attention
is directed inwards – on the energy moving through the body sensing the
positions from inside, in the change of feelings and emotions as one shifts
from posture to posture the energy is drawn further inwards.

The
Sacred Dances are group dances and one learns to have an awareness of themselves
as well as the group. Emphasis is placed on learning from an inner space of
relaxation, working from the ‘Hara’ – the area around the
belly known for centuries in the Orient to be the center of our being.
